Sencha Furikake so delicious that you can't stop eating rice!

Furikake is a convenient Japanese topping which you sprinkle on rice to change the taste. It's a favorite for kids as it really boosts their appetites, but also delicious for adults as well.

Here we'll be making a healthy and natural tasting Furikake using the used leaves of Sencha.

It's so delicious that you won't be able to stop eating your rice!!

It's also a fantastic way of consuming all the leftover nutrients in the green tea. Infusing loose leaf tea can only extract 30% of the nutrients of the tea leaf. By taking the used leaves and turning them into Furikake, you can enjoy 100% of the nutrients!

Would you like to try? It's easy!! Here's how.
  • Recipe Name: Sencha Furikake

  • Ingredients:
    • Leftover Sencha Leaves. (Here we use Sencha Umejirushi)
      • This can be replaced with Gyokuro leaves as well.
    • Dried Baby Shrimp
    • Ground toasted sesame seeds
    • Bonito Flakes (Katsuobushi)
    • Salt
    • Sesame Oil

No specified quantity for these ingredients, use as you like.

  • Steps:
    1. Take the leftover Sencha (or Gyokuro) leaves and place it in a pan.
    2. Fry at low heat until the tea leaves become dry. Wet leaves would take around 20 minutes.
    3. Stir so the leaves will not burn.
    4. Add dried baby shrimp, Bonito Flakes, and Ground toasted sesame seeds.
    5. Fry an additional 5 minutes at low heat.
    6. Stop the heat and add salt, sesame oil
  • Key Point!
    • Sencha quality does count! The higher the quality the Sencha, the younger and softer the leaves would be. These are better for making Furikake. For the Sencha in our website, choose the Eighty Eighth night tea or above.
    • If you're using a Gyokuro, don't worry about the quality. They're usually all pretty sufficient.
