Handcrafted

  • The Kazuho or the 70-prong chasen is a versatile tool that can froth up foam for a Usucha (thin-tea Matcha preparation), or conduct a powerful mix for a Koicha (thick-tea Matcha preparation). The thin handle makes it easy to handle.

  • As with all traditional whisk styles, “70-prong” serves as a guideline rather than a precise count—the actual number of tines may vary slightly depending on the bamboo and the artisan’s hand-finishing.

3 Facts - Chikusendo's Bamboo Whisk

1

The Prestige of Chikusendō

Chikusendō stands among the most revered names in Japanese chasen craftsmanship. Their artisans hold the official title of Dentō Kōgeishi, or “Traditional Craftsperson certified by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry”. This is a distinction given only to masters who preserve centuries-old techniques to the highest standards.
2

Each Whisk is Different

At Chikusendō, no two pieces of bamboo are ever treated as the same. Each stalk has its own character, with its thickness, hardness, and even the way it responds to seasonal climate. A high-quality whisk is not created by following a fixed formula. The artisan must read the bamboo and adjust their technique, responding intuitively to the material.
3

Only three whisks from a single stalk

The journey begins long before carving. Bamboo is harvested all at once between November and December, then carefully heated to remove oil before being sun-dried for a month. After that, it rests for two full years to stabilize. Even then, only bamboo with perfect balance, (neither too hard nor too soft) can be molded into a chasen. Minute flaws such as tiny chips in the tines disqualify a whisk entirely.  From a single stalk of bamboo, only about three whisks ultimately meet Chikusendō’s rigorous standards, something that no machine can replicate
